Securing Water Resources Approach Evaluation

2021 - Present

WaterAid

Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Niger

The Securing Water Resources Approach (SWRA) is an innovative initiative that aims to improve water security and strengthen climate resilience by integrating water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) with integrated water resource management (IWRM). The approach incorporates risk assessment into community-level water management and involves local monitoring of the water table to assess water availability into the dry season. SWRA was first launched in 2011 and has since been implemented across four countries in West Africa.

Iwel was contracted to undertake an evaluation of SWRA, looking at seven different aspects of the approach. In-country data collection was undertaken by local enumerators and managed by a regional Consultant, with support from the Iwel core evaluation team. Findings, learning points, and recommendations were made to WaterAid, and a learning brief tailored towards policymakers was produced (publication pending).
